Beef heifers produced a weight gain of 0.88 kg/day with our
sorghum silage
, whereas the mixed haylage and alfalfa grass gained
only 0.82 kg/day.

Dairy cows with our sorghum silage had similar dry matter intake, milk
yield and milk composition as compared to the control diet with
alfalfa-corn silage.

It may be used for hay, haylage, silage, green chop or pasture. This
has excellent recovery after harvesting or grazing

It can be used as a cover crop for soil improvement. The plant is frost
sensitive, thus produces no volunteer plants in the following season.

About 1.5 million acres of pearl millet forage are grown in the US
annually.

Gasohol Systems Technologies, Inc. has developed a temperate
cultivar of forage pearl millet that can be grown in Canada and in the
Pacific Northwest of the U.S.

Forage pearl millet has an excellent feeding quality and farmers have
reported that livestock preferred pearl millet to alfalfa-grass silage or
pasture.
